Pasien yang dirawat di rumah sakit cenderung berada dalam keadaan emosional yang negatif. Emotional contagion (penularan emosi) adalah suatu kecenderungan untuk secara otomatis menirukan (mimicry) dan menyesuaikan (synchrony) ekspresi wajar, vokal atau suara, postur tubuh, dan gerakan orang lain, dan konsekuensinya, ikut terpengaruh secara emosional. Akibatnya, pasien-pasien yang berada dalam satu ruangan dapat membaca emosi pasien lain melalui perilaku ekspresif mereka. Penelitian ini menekankan perhatian pada penularan emosi yang terjadi pada pasien-pasien tersebut, yaitu mekanisme, akibat, serta faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhinya. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode studi kasus holistik. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan wawancara, observasi, angket, dan arsip. Berdasarkan penelitian ini peneliti menemukan bahwa penularan emosi dapat terjadi melalui tiga cara, yaitu conscious cognitive process, conditioned and unconditioned responses, serta mimicry/feedback.
