ETHICAL CLEARANCE AND RESEARCH ETHICS POLICY
JPEKA: Jurnal Pendidikan Ekonomi, Manajemen dan Keuangan expects research involving human participants, animals, personal information, or other ethically sensitive subjects to be conducted in accordance with applicable ethical principles, institutional requirements, and relevant laws and regulations.
1. Ethical Approval
Research involving human participants and/or animals must obtain appropriate ethical approval from an Institutional Review Board, Research Ethics Committee, Ethics Committee, or other authorized body whenever such approval is required by applicable institutional rules or regulations.
Where ethical approval has been granted, Authors must clearly report the relevant information in the manuscript, including the name of the approving institution or ethics committee and the ethical clearance or approval number, together with the year in which approval was granted.
2. Low- or Negligible-Risk Research
For research classified as low or negligible risk that does not require formal ethical clearance under the applicable institutional requirements or regulations, Authors may provide an ethical self-declaration. The declaration should explain why formal ethical clearance was not required and describe the safeguards applied to protect participants and their rights.
For low- or negligible-risk research conducted in schools or classroom learning environments, permission from the relevant school or institution may serve as site or institutional authorization to conduct the research, where formal ethical clearance is not required. Such permission does not replace formal ethics approval where that approval is mandatory.
Even when formal ethical clearance is not required, Authors must implement appropriate safeguards, including voluntary participation, informed consent or assent where relevant, privacy protection, and confidentiality.
3. Reporting Ethical Considerations in the Manuscript
Where applicable, information about ethical approval or an ethical self-declaration should be included in the Methods section, preferably under a subsection titled “Ethical Considerations.” The statement must accurately reflect the procedures followed in the actual study.
Suggested statement for low- or negligible-risk research in a school or classroom setting:
“The Authors declare that this study was classified as low- or negligible-risk research and did not require formal ethical clearance under the applicable institutional requirements. Permission to conduct the study was obtained from the relevant school/institution. Appropriate ethical safeguards, including voluntary participation, consent or assent where relevant, and protection of participant confidentiality, were implemented.”
Authors must adapt this wording to ensure that it accurately describes the study. The statement must not be used to imply that approval or permission was obtained if it was not.
4. Consent, Privacy, and Identifiable Materials
Where applicable, Authors must obtain appropriate informed consent, permission, or authorization and protect the privacy, confidentiality, dignity, and other rights of research participants.
For photographs, videos, personal information, or other materials that may identify an individual, appropriate consent or permission must be obtained where required. If identification is not scientifically necessary, identifying features should be anonymized or obscured appropriately, for example by blurring faces, masking names or identification numbers, or cropping images.
Any modification made to protect privacy must not alter or misrepresent information relevant to the scientific or academic interpretation of the material.
5. Responsibilities of Authors and the Editorial Team
Authors must comply with the ethical declarations and supporting-document requirements specified in the current JPEKA submission guidelines and the applicable Ethical Statement or other required submission forms. Authors are responsible for ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and authenticity of all statements and documents relating to research ethics.
When necessary, JPEKA may request supporting documentation, including ethical clearance, institutional or school permission, informed consent, an ethical self-declaration, or other relevant records.
A manuscript containing insufficient or unclear information on research ethics may be returned to the Authors for clarification, held during editorial assessment, or rejected. Ethical concerns identified after publication will be assessed in accordance with JPEKA’s applicable publication ethics and research-integrity procedures, with appropriate action taken where warranted.
