Antibacterial Activity of Lime Peel Extract (Citrus aurantifolia) against Growth of Shigella dysenteriae

Abstract

Shigella dysenteriae is a gram negative bacterium that causes dysentery. The high level of S. dysenteriae resistance againts antibiotic, urge the exploration of natural alternative antibiotics from natural source that contains bioactive compound. Lime peel contains saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, and essential oils that has antibacterial activity. The aim of this research to determine the antibacterial activity of lime peel extract and the best concentration in inhibiting S. dysenteriae. Antibacterial activity test using agar-well-diffusion with Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The concentration of lime peel extract ussed were 12,5%, 25%, 37,5%, and 50%. Positive control used ciprofloxacin and negative control used DMSO 10%. The results obtained were analyzed by using Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, continued by one way ANOVA and Duncan’s test. Based on the results of statistical tests showed that lime peel extract was able to inhibiting S. dysenteriae. Based on Duncan’s test result, concentration of 37,5% and 50% exerted the same influence in inhibiting S. dysenteriae, the resulting clear zone of 2,96 ± 0,34 cm and 3,35 ± 0,26 cm in order.
