The Role of Creativity in Mediating the Relationship between Curiosity and Academic Motivation in Art Students

Motivation and curiosity are the important aspects of learning. For art students, curiosity can provide stimulation or encouragement to be more interested in active learning and making works of art. Art students can also be expected to have a high level of creativity in order to maximize their ideas, concepts, and representations of works. Supported by high curiosity and creativity, students' academic motivation can be increased. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of curiosity on academic motivation mediated by creativity in art students. This study involved 180 art students. The quantitative cross-sectional research was used, and mediated regression analysis method was employed to nalayze the data. The instruments used were the Indonesian adaptation scale of the short version of the AMS (Academic Motivation Scale), the Curiosity and Exploration Inventory-II, and the Kaufman of Creativity Scale (K-DOCS). The results showed that there is a direct effect of curiosity on academic motivation, while creativity indirectly affect the relationship between curiosity and academic motivation. The result of this study indicates that a high curiosity and creativity are expected in art students because these aspects enable them to boost their motivation and create their art works.

Abstrak: Motivasi dan rasa ingin tahu adalah aspek penting dalam pembelajaran. Pada mahasiswa seni, rasa ingin tahu dapat memberi rangsangan untuk aktif dalam pembelajaran maupun pembuatan karya seni. Mahasiswa seni diharapkan memiliki kreativitas yang tinggi agar dapat memaksimalkan ide, konsep dan representasi karya. Dengan didukung rasa ingin tahu dan kreativitas yang tinggi, motivasi akademik mahasiswa juga dapat menjadi lebih meningkat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui adanya peran rasa ingin tahu terhadap motivasi akademik yang dimediasi oleh kreativitas pada mahasiswa seni. Penelitian ini melibatkan 180 mahasiswa seni. Pendekatan kuantitatif cross-sectional digunakan, dan teknik mediated regression analysis dimanfaatkan untuk analisis data. Penelitian ini menggunakan alat ukur skala adaptasi berbahasa Indonesia versi singkat AMS (Academic Motivation Scale), The curiosity and exploration inventory-II, dan menggunakan Kaufman of Creativity Scale (K-DOCS). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya peran langsung rasa ingin tahu terhadap motivasi akademik, dan kreativitas berperan tidak langsung dalam hubungan antara rasa ingin tahu dengan motivasi akademik. Hasil penelitian ini mengindikasikan bahwa mahasiswa seni diharapkan memiliki aspek rasa ingin tahu dan kreativitas yang tinggi agar motivasi belajar mereka meningkat dan dapat mencipatkan karya-karya seni sesuai tugas belajar mereka.
