Research Ethics
The Jurnal Penelitian Pendidikan Matematika dan Sains (JPPMS), published by the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Negeri Surabaya, is committed to maintaining ethical standards, research integrity, and responsible scholarly publication. All research submitted to JPPMS must be conducted in accordance with applicable ethical principles, institutional requirements, and relevant regulations. This policy applies to research in mathematics and science education, including mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology education.
Ethical Approval
Research involving human participants, animals, personal information, or other ethically sensitive subjects must obtain appropriate ethical approval from a recognized Institutional Review Board, Research Ethics Committee, or other authorized body, where such approval is required by applicable institutional or regulatory provisions.
Authors must clearly report relevant ethical approval information in their manuscripts, including the name of the approving institution or ethics committee and the ethical approval or clearance number, including the year of approval where applicable.
For research in mathematics and science education, ethical approval requirements may apply to studies involving students, teachers, educational interventions, classroom observations, interviews, questionnaires, assessments, or the collection and analysis of identifiable personal information. Authors are responsible for determining and complying with the ethical requirements applicable to their research context.
Low and Negligible Risk Research
For research classified as low or negligible risk, where formal ethical clearance is not required under applicable institutional or regulatory provisions, Authors may provide an ethical self-declaration explaining why formal ethical approval was not required and describing the ethical safeguards implemented during the research.
For low or negligible risk research conducted in schools or classroom settings, permission or authorization from the relevant school or educational institution may serve as site or institutional permission where formal ethical clearance is not required. Such permission does not replace formal ethical approval when the latter is required.
Regardless of the level of risk, Authors must ensure that participants are treated respectfully and fairly. Appropriate safeguards must be implemented, including voluntary participation, informed consent where applicable, the right to withdraw where applicable, protection of personal information, and confidentiality of research data.
Ethical Considerations in the Manuscript
Where applicable, information regarding ethical approval or ethical self-declaration must be included in the Methods section of the manuscript, preferably under a subsection entitled Ethical Considerations.
For low or negligible risk research conducted in schools or classroom settings, an appropriate statement may be:
The Authors declare that this study was classified as low or negligible risk and did not require formal ethical clearance under the applicable institutional requirements. Permission to conduct the research was obtained from the relevant school or educational institution, and appropriate ethical safeguards, including voluntary participation, consent where applicable, and protection of participant confidentiality, were implemented.
Authors must adapt this statement to accurately reflect the actual circumstances of their research. This statement must not be used when formal ethical approval was required but had not been obtained.
Consent, Privacy, and Identifiable Materials
Where applicable, Authors must obtain appropriate informed consent, permission, or authorization from research participants or their legal guardians and other authorized parties before collecting or publishing research data. For research involving students who are minors, parental or guardian consent and participant assent must be obtained where required by applicable ethical standards and institutional policies.
Authors must protect the privacy, confidentiality, and rights of participants throughout the research process and publication. Personal information collected through questionnaires, interviews, classroom observations, learning assessments, or other research instruments must be handled responsibly and used only for legitimate research purposes.
For photographs, videos, audio recordings, or other identifiable materials included in a manuscript, appropriate consent or authorization must be obtained where required. When identification is unnecessary for the scholarly purpose of the manuscript, identifiable information should be anonymized or obscured, for example by blurring faces, masking names or identification numbers, or cropping images.
Any modification made to protect privacy must not alter or misrepresent information relevant to the scholarly interpretation of the research findings.
Author and Editorial Responsibility
Authors are responsible for ensuring that their research complies with applicable ethical standards and that all statements concerning ethical approval, institutional permission, informed consent, and participant protection are accurate and complete.
JPPMS may request supporting documentation, including ethical clearance certificates, school or institutional permissions, informed consent documentation, or ethical self-declarations, when necessary to verify compliance with this policy.
Manuscripts that lack sufficient ethical information may be returned to Authors for clarification or revision. Manuscripts that fail to meet applicable ethical requirements may be suspended from editorial processing or rejected.
Any ethical concerns identified during peer review or after publication will be assessed by the journal in accordance with its applicable publication ethics procedures and relevant institutional or regulatory requirements. The journal reserves the right to take appropriate action when research misconduct, inadequate ethical safeguards, or inaccurate ethical declarations are identified.
Through this policy, JPPMS seeks to promote responsible research practices, protect research participants, and maintain the integrity and credibility of publications in mathematics and science education.
