Abstract

Career adaptability helps vocational high school (SMK) students navigate the school-to-work transition, yet SMK graduates still account for the highest open unemployment rate among education levels in Indonesia. Evidence on its antecedents comes mostly from university students and employees, and few studies have tested an individual factor (work values) and a social factor (parental support) together among SMK students. This study examines their separate and joint contributions to the career adaptability of Online Business and Marketing students at SMK Negeri 1 Boyolangu, Tulungagung. Using a quantitative correlational design, 107 twelfth-grade students completed the Career Adapt-Abilities Scale (CAAS), the Work Values Questionnaire (WVQ), and a career-related parental support scale, and the data were analyzed with multiple linear regression. Parental support was a positive and significant predictor (β = 0.478, p < 0.001), whereas work values were not (β = 0.045, p = 0.619); together, they explained 24.6% of the variance in career adaptability (F = 16.943, p < 0.001). This study contributes new evidence from an under-examined population: unlike patterns typically reported for college students, work values did not yet predict career adaptability among SMK students, whereas parental support did, suggesting that at this developmental stage career adaptability is shaped more by the social environment than by internalized values. Career guidance in SMK should therefore involve parents systematically.
