Business Model Canvas-Based Sustainable Supply Chain Design for Banyuwangi Coffee

Research Backgrounds: Banyuwangi has substantial coffee production potential and a growing ecosystem of smallholder farmers, cooperatives, and coffee-processing micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Nevertheless, the existing supply chain remains characterized by traditional transactions, dependence on intermediaries, limited post-harvest capabilities, and restricted access to premium markets. Introduction / Main Objectives: This study aims to design a sustainability-oriented supply chain model for Banyuwangi coffee using the Business Model Canvas (BMC) framework. Methods: The study employed a mixed-methods approach with an exploratory sequential design. Data were collected through literature review, in-depth interviews, field observations, and secondary documentation. The field study focused on coffee-producing areas in Kalibaru, Glenmore, Songgon, and Gombengsari, involving approximately 20–25 informants comprising farmers, cooperative managers, and coffee-processing MSME actors. Analysis was conducted through supply chain mapping, SWOT analysis, development of the BMC, and integration of the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) principles into a Sustainable Business Model Canvas (SBMC). Results/ Findings: The findings show that the supply chain is primarily structured around farmers, cooperatives, and processing MSMEs, with consumers and exporters as downstream markets. The major constraints are dependence on middlemen, low value addition at farm level, limited post-harvest technology, constrained financing and logistics, and limited cooperative capacity for certification and premium-market access. The proposed SBMC emphasizes farmer empowerment, stronger cooperative functions, product differentiation, digital marketing, certification readiness, and environmentally responsible production. Conclusions: The model provides an integrated framework for improving economic value creation while strengthening social inclusion and environmental responsibility in the Banyuwangi coffee supply chain.
