Artificial Intelligence Policy

1. Introduction

The Indonesian Journal of Kinanthropology (IJOK) recognises that artificial intelligence (AI) can support research and manuscript preparation. However, AI cannot replace human creativity, critical thinking, scholarly judgement, or responsibility.

This policy guides authors, reviewers, and editors in the responsible and ethical use of AI tools.

2. Allowed Use of AI Tools

Authors may use AI tools for:

  1. Language editing and proofreading: Improving grammar, spelling, clarity, and readability.
  2. Reference management: Organising citations and formatting references.
  3. Plagiarism checking: Assessing manuscript originality and similarity.
  4. Data analysis: Supporting data processing, analysis, and visualisation.
  5. Translation: Assisting with translation, provided that authors verify its accuracy.
  6. Manuscript formatting: Formatting headings, tables, figures, and references.

Authors must review and verify all AI-assisted outputs.

3. Not Allowed Use of AI Tools

AI tools must not be used to:

  1. Replace author contribution: Generate the main manuscript content without meaningful intellectual contribution from the authors.
  2. Fabricate data: Create, alter, or manipulate research data and results.
  3. Generate false references: Create inaccurate or unverifiable citations.
  4. Misrepresent findings: Produce misleading results, interpretations, images, tables, or conclusions.
  5. Commit plagiarism: Reproduce published or copyrighted materials without proper citation or permission.
  6. Process confidential information: Upload personal, sensitive, or unpublished information to public AI platforms without appropriate safeguards.

AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors.

4. Recommendations for AI Tool Usage

Authors who use AI tools must:

  1. Review, edit, and verify all AI-assisted content;
  2. Check references and factual information against original sources;
  3. Disclose any significant use of generative AI;
  4. Identify the AI tool and explain its purpose;
  5. Protect personal, confidential, and sensitive information; and
  6. Take full responsibility for the final manuscript.

5. Ethical Considerations

The use of AI must comply with research ethics, academic integrity, copyright, confidentiality, and data-protection standards.

Data fabrication, plagiarism, false references, privacy violations, and misleading findings will be considered breaches of publication ethics.

Authors remain fully responsible for all content included in their manuscripts.

6. Use of AI by Reviewers and Editors

Reviewers and editors must not upload manuscripts, unpublished data, reviewer reports, author information, or confidential materials to public AI platforms.

AI must not replace the independent judgement of reviewers or editors. Peer-review assessments and final editorial decisions must be made by humans.

7. Editorial Review

Manuscripts submitted to the Indonesian Journal of Kinanthropology (IJOK) will undergo the same peer-review process, whether AI tools were used or not.

Inappropriate, unethical, or undisclosed AI use may result in correction, rejection, withdrawal, or retraction.

8. Review of the Policy

This policy may be updated periodically to reflect developments in AI technology, research ethics, and scholarly publishing.
