Abstract

First-year cadets at maritime service academies experience academic and non-academic demands due to the semi-military education system. These conditions may increase academic stress among cadets. Self-efficacy is considered one of the internal factors related to academic stress because individuals with strong self-efficacy tend to be more confident in dealing with academic challenges. Objective: This study aimed to determine the relationship between self-efficacy and academic stress among first-year cadets at Poltekpel Surabaya. Method: This study used a quantitative correlational design. The participants were 228 first-year cadets at Poltekpel Surabaya selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through online questionnaires using the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) and Educational Stress Scale for Adolescents (ESSA). Data analysis was conducted using Spearman correlation because one variable was not normally distributed. Results: The findings showed that self-efficacy had no significant relationship with academic stress among first-year cadets at Poltekpel Surabaya. The Spearman correlation test showed a correlation coefficient of -0.044 with a significance value of 0.513 (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Self-efficacy could not be considered a significant protective factor against academic stress among first-year cadets at Poltekpel Surabaya. Other factors, especially the educational environment and semi-military system, may have stronger influences on academic stress.
