Abstract

News texts are not just a series of words and sentences. Behind the words, there are complex meaning relations that can affect how readers understand and respond to the news. This news text then becomes interesting to examine how the form and function of synonyms used by news writers. This research aims to explain how synonyms are formed, the difference in meaning, and their use in the news text titled "Frieden ohne Freiheit heißt Unterdrückung". The results show that 7 data found are forms of synonyms, of which 3 are in the form of verbs, and the remaining 4 are in the form of nouns. In the study of meaning relations, synonyms aim to increase the diversity of words so that they are easier to read and interesting, clarify meaning, fulfill the needs of writing style, convey different nuances, avoid unwanted repetition of words, and can enrich the language. Furthermore, textually, the repeated use of synonymous words can also contain a certain purpose, so that readers or speech partners can follow/agree with what the speaker says.
