Abstract

This study uses Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis approach to examine how the mother-child relationship is depicted in Nadin Amizah's song 'Bertaut' from a gender and media perspective. Three dimensions of analysis: micro (text), meso (discursive practice), and macro (social practice) are used in this qualitative study. At the micro level, it is found that the use of straightforward, introspective, and sentimental language in the song's lyrics symbolizes the intimate bond between a mother and her child. This song was created at the meso level as a representation of the singer's individual experience, which was then disseminated through digital media and widely interpreted by listeners as a collective emotional experience. However, at the macro scale, this song reflects the sociocultural construction of Indonesian society, which views women, especially mothers, as important figures in maintaining the emotional stability of the family. According to the research findings, the song 'Bertaut' functions as a means of representing social values and the formation of gender role constructions in family life in addition to being a musical composition.
