IMPLEMENTATION OF LIFE SKILLS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR AUTISM STUDENTS AT SLB TUNAS KASIH SURABAYA
Abstract
This study aims to describe the application of a life skills training program for autistic students facing challenges in emotion regulation, fine motor skills, and social interaction. These challenges manifest in difficulties with hand coordination, irritability when disturbed, and a strong interest in artistic activities that require proper guidance. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, emphasizing an in-depth understanding of the process, experiences, and perceived value of the subjects throughout the program. Data collection was conducted through observation, interviews, and documentation over one week, covering the initial evaluation, program implementation, and post-activity assessment. The study’s findings indicate that the life skills training program effectively helped subjects improve sensory responses, movement coordination, social communication, and emotional regulation. Subjects also began to show increased perseverance and calmness through artistic activities, thereby enhancing self-regulation and channeling interests more effectively. These findings are expected to serve as a reference for teachers, therapists, and parents in designing similar programs that focus on harmonizing sensory-motor development, emotional regulation, and potential development in autistic students.
