Abstract

The Sunan Ampel religious tourism area in Surabaya is one of the most influential pilgrimage destinations in Indonesia. This article analyzes the architecture of the Great Mosque of Sunan Ampel as a manifestation of cultural acculturation between Islam, Hindu-Javanese tradition, and Middle Eastern influence. Using a literature study and descriptive analysis, the findings show that architectural elements such as the tiered tajug roof, the Gapuro Limo (five gates), and the Surya Wilwatikta ornament are not merely physical components but profound theological symbols. The results indicate that the success of Sunan Ampel's da'wah is reflected in the integration of local aesthetics, which facilitated the acceptance of Islamic teachings by the Javanese community in the 15th century. Further analysis also highlights the role of architecture in shaping place attachment and the sociocultural dynamics of the area (Kusumo, 2017; Stanza, 2019). This article is expected to contribute to the development of religious tourism grounded in the preservation of architectural and cultural values.
