Abstract

Energy has an important role in life on earth. One alternative energy that is often used to overcome the problem of the electrical energy crisis is sunlight through a process called photovoltaic (PV). At this time DSSC is the use of solar cell technology that is being developed. The performance of a DSSC depends on the dye. The use of natural dyes in DSSC is still being developed to produce dyes that are easily available and environmentally friendly. This study aims to determine the wavelength absorption spectrum and band gap value of curcma xanthoriza roxb extract at acidic pH. In this study, the method used for extraction is the maceration method. Curcuma xanthoriza roxb results were characterized by using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer and voltameter to determine the wavelength absorption and band gap energy of the extract. The results of the characterization using UV-Vis spectrophotometer showed that the curcuma xanthoriza roxb extract contained curcumin compounds in terms of the absorption length range of 423 - 425 nm. The smallest band gap energy at pH 1 is 0.66651 eV with LUMO values of 0.63675 eV and HOMO -0.02976 e. The result of the smallest band gap energy will maximize DSSC performance. Based on the results obtained, curcuma xanthoriza roxb extract has the potential to be used as a natural dye in DSSC in terms of the smallest band gap energy.
