Ngupi Pai Culture in Coffee Shops: Media and Social Space in the Urban Society in Bandar Lampung

Artikel ini mengkaji bagaimana aktivitas dan produk budaya ngupi pai, yakni tawaran minum kopi bersama dalam khazanah budaya orang Lampung, mengalami perluasan makna seiring perkembangan kota dan lingkungan sosial urban yang multikultural. Aktivitas meminum kopi yang lazim dilakukan di rumah (lamban) memasuki fase dan membentuk ruang sosial baru seiring proses komoditisasi ruang publik dan perkembangan industri food and beverages, di mana media dan teknologi informasi berperan sentral dalam membentuk citra modern dan relung pasar baru bagi Coffee Shop. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif dengan teknik pengumpulan data wawancara mendalam dan observasi partisipan di kota Bandar Lampung. Memahami fenomena ini melalui gagasan Mary Douglas (1966; 2003) tentang makanan dan minuman, praktik konsumsi “ngupi pai” di coffeeshops berpengaruh terhadap cara di mana ikatan sosial, formasi identitas sosial, dan struktur ekonomi yang baru dibentuk. Ekpansi coffeshops yang dibarengi dengan konstruksi citra dan identitas baru telah mengubah makna ngupi pai ala Lampung dari kebersamaan di ruang privat (rumah) ke ruang sosial baru yang terkomoditisasi (coffee shops). Kendati demikian, kebersamaan tetap menjadi nilai intrinsik dari”ngupi pai”. Hal ini menunjukkan sifat adaptifnya di tengah transformasi sosial budaya masyarakat perkotaan modern, seraya mempertahankan perannya dalam merawat toleransi, kerukunan antaretnis, dan sarana diplomasi pada konteks urban Lampung.
