“Should Women Smile at Mona Lisa Smile (2003)?” A Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis of Gender Representation

Penelitian ini menggunakan a Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis (FCDA) terhadap film Mona Lisa Smile (2003), yang disutradarai oleh Mike Newell, dengan tujuan mengeksplorasi representasi peran dan norma gender. Ditetapkan pada era 1950-an, film ini memberikan konteks untuk mengkaji sikap historis dan kontemporer terhadap peran wanita dalam pendidikan dan aspirasi karier. Dengan menganalisis naratif, karakter, dan dialog dalam film, studi ini mengungkap pesan-pesan tersembunyi tentang gender dan mengevaluasi kontribusi film ini terhadap wacana representasi gender dalam media. Dengan memanfaatkan teori dan konsep feminis utama, analisis ini mengidentifikasi elemen-elemen progresif dan regresif dalam narasi film. Temuan dari penelitian ini menyoroti bagaimana Mona Lisa Smile menghadapi kompleksitas norma-norma gender, yang secara bersamaan menantang dan mengilustrasikan penguatan yang berkelanjutan terhadap norma-norma tersebut dalam media. Penelitian ini menggarisbawahi pentingnya media dalam membentuk sikap masyarakat terhadap gender dan berkontribusi pada pemahaman yang lebih mendalam tentang representasi gender.
