Copyright is a form of legal protection granted to creators for their intellectual works, including songs. The phenomenon of song covers on YouTube by individuals or groups often raises legal issues concerning the economic rights of songwriters. This study aims to analyze the legal protection of songwriters whose songs are covered and published on YouTube, based on Law Number 28 of 2014 concerning Copyright and Government Regulation Number 56 of 2021 concerning the Management of Copyright Royalties for Songs and/or Music. The method used is normative juridical, employing statutory and conceptual approaches. The results of the study indicate that songwriters hold exclusive rights, namely economic and moral rights, which can be infringed through unauthorized cover practices. Although YouTube has implemented the Content ID system as a measure to protect copyright, its implementation still faces challenges such as low legal awareness among users and the complexity of royalty distribution. The conclusion of this study emphasizes the need for more specific copyright regulations governing song covers on digital platforms, as well as enhanced collaboration among copyright holders, digital platforms, and the government. Education for songwriters and public awareness regarding the importance of respecting copyright are also crucial factors in maintaining a balance between creativity and the protection of creators' rights.
