The Influence of Social Media on the Formation of Self-Identity among University Students in Surabaya (A Case Study of University Students in Surabaya)

Emphasizing Surabaya's students, this study seeks to investigate how social media channels shape the development of self-identity among young people from the digital era. Apart from the advantages and drawbacks of social media use, this research also looks at how these platforms shape societal standards around what is bodily appealing. This research used a quantitative methodology using questionnaires as the instrument of data collecting. The study's results show that students' communication patterns and the development of their self-identity are significantly and positively impacted by their interaction with social media platforms. However, there is some evidence that heavy use may diminish the value of in-person relationships and even prevent them from taking place. While this research is expected to provide light on how students utilize social media, it will also emphasize the need of users being cautious while utilizing these platforms. Furthermore, individuals should use social media appropriately to foster positive relationships via interactions like talking and sharing. Therefore, it is expected that this study will add to the existing body of knowledge on the topic and provide a more thorough comprehension of how social media influences the way students in Surabaya develop their own identities.
