ABSTRACT
Material Science I subject is a compulsory subject for students of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at UNESA. Students' understanding of the subject is still considered to be less than optimal despite being able to solve the problem. This was indicated by the lack of student activity in the classroom when the teacher gave feedback in the form of questions. Student knowledge is still abstract, especially in the substructure of crystal structures. Increasing student understanding in Material Science I can be done by changing learning strategies. The change was to find data summarized in an action called Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK). This research was also conducted to find out the solutions and the potential of each participant can be explored optimally. From the identification, the discovery learning model was chosen through autocad media and the physical form of crystal structure. The subjects of this study were undergraduate mechanical engineering students at UNESA with a total of 26 students. The method of measuring in three cycles. Data collection methods are observation, performance tests, quantitative and qualitative data collection, and data analysis techniques for learning implementation. Based on the results of data analysis and discussion it was found that the most dominant lecturer activity in providing lecture materials using autocad media can improve student understanding by 0.47 points from cycle 1 to cycle 2, increasing from cycle 2 to cycle 3 by 0.04 points. Activities in providing explanations of student questions using autocad media can improve student understanding by 0.25 points from cycle 1 to cycle 2 and increase student understanding by 0.27 points. Completeness of students' cognitive learning outcomes has increased from cycle 1 to 3, with completeness percentage of cycle 1 is 19.23% and cycle 2 is 34.62%, and in cycle 3 it is 50%. The value of independent student assignments shows that discovery learning learning methods can improve students' understanding of the crystal structure as indicated by the average score of independent student assignments is 91.35 with 100% completeness.
