Abstract

As the development of science and technology in this globalization era, it is undoubtable that foreign language especially English language is very important. Generally, students who just start learning English need the vocabulary because with the sufficient vocabulary they can understand this language. To maximize the vocabulary teaching, some teaching aids are needed. One of this aid is audio media in vocabulary teaching to improve reading comprehension.This study aims to determine the English reading comprehension level between cadets in experiment group which usedaudio media in vocabulary teaching and in control group without audio media. Next is to know if vocabulary teaching using audio media is more efective to improve English reading comprehension than without audio media.This study uses a quantitative approach by using quasi experiment method. The population of this study is all the cadets in the 2nd semester in Surabaya Merchant Marine Polytechnic year 2014-2015. Samples were cadets in the class B and D totaling 49 persons. In this study the treatment is the using of audio media to support teaching English vocabulary to improve reading comprehension. The research sample consisted of two groups, namely experimental group and control group. For the treatment, the audio media is used in the experimental group while the control group using conventional media . In the early stages of pre -test is used to determine the level of reading comprehension . Then the experimental group will be treated using audio media within a certain period and the control group only uses the conventional media. Then both groups will be measured for the second time the so-called posttest. Data analysis techniques used t-test and test data analysis as the requirements.Results from this study indicate that there are significant differences in reading comprehension of English in a group of cadets are taught vocabulary using audio media than the group who did not use the audio media as well as prove that the teaching of vocabulary using audio media more effectively improve reading comprehension in the English language than teaching without audio media.
