Abstract
Suicide is a phenomenon that is of global concern and one of the important indicators of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Suicide occurs from a complicated interaction of genetic, psychological, economic, and other factors. These factors mutually reinforce or weaken the occurrence of suicide. Factors causing suicide can be grouped into distal and proximal factors. This study aims to determine the causal factors that influence the suicide rate in seventeen countries from 2009 to 2019 using panel data regression analysis. The data used in this study is secondary data sourced from the official website of the World Bank, World Health Organization (WHO), Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), and PEW Research Center (PRC). The results showed that the individual random effect panel model was the best model for estimating the suicide rate. The predictors of religiosity level and fertility rate have a negative effect, while alcohol consumption per capita and unemployment rate have a negative effect
